The “By Its Cover” exhibition presents approximately 250 examples of modern American book cover design from the 1930’s into the twenty-first century. It traces the evolution of the book cover as designers and publishers realize the potential for well-conceived cover design to be a graphic articulations of progressive literature. Progressive publishing companies like New Directions and Grove Press appreciated modernist graphic design’s marriage of type and image and were among the most important sponsors of groundbreaking American graphic work.
