About

In Flux: Highlights from the Collection

City, O city, I call you my own–

Blood, sweat, and tears make it true!

Friendships and good times are part of the whole,

With troubles and struggles no few.

People and purposes always in flux

Here, Newark, I’m staying with you.

From the poem, Newark is Home

By Doctor E. Alma Flagg (1918 – 2018)

Flagg was the first African American woman to be a school principal in Newark and the first African-American principal in a racially integrated school in Newark.

The Collection of Rutgers University-Newark is the result of artwork purchased by the university, given through the generosity of donors or acquired through the New Jersey Arts Inclusion Program.  Beginning with the 1979 donation of Ben Jones’ Paul Robeson and Sarah Vaughan, the collection has grown to represent a wide variety of themes, mediums and movements from 20th century American paintings and works on paper to Contemporary art, murals and public sculptures.

Paul Robeson Galleries is committed to growing the Rutgers University-Newark Collection with a focus on local artists whose works further the mission of Paul Robeson and speak to the history, culture and vision of the city of Newark.  Recent acquisitions have been made with this goal in mind and represent not only artists living and working in Newark, but participants in the Paul Robeson Galleries Artist-in-Residence program.
