PRG is happy to announce our latest Artist In Residence – Jill Sigman. This residency is a collaboration with the Clement A. Price Institute on Ethnicity, Culture & the Modern Experience (and our colleague Alexandra Chang).
While in residence Sigman will be working on her project, “Re-Seeding”. Of this project, the artist stats, “Re-Seeding is a multi-modal project that includes performance, clay work, tea sharing, and reflection about the histories of this land. The project grows out of my relationship to this land as a settler, a granddaughter of immigrant Jewish refugees, and a non-indigenous person born in Brooklyn on occupied Lenape homeland. Re-Seeding asks the questions: how do I live on this land with respect and bring about healing? And how do I make sense of a lineage of grief, genocide, and displacement in a land where I am part of a legacy of colonial trauma? The project involves multiple dancers researching their own lineages and connecting to land through movement, plants, food, and story. Our research includes dialogue with indigenous activists, ecologists, mycologists, historians, and our own families.”
Sigman will be presenting a performance at the Robeson Campus Center Gallery as part of Newark Arts Festival on Saturday September 30. More details to be announced.
