About

David Antonio Cruz’s Green, howiwantyougreen is based on the last eleven poems, Sonnets of Dark Love, by the Spanish poet Garcia Lorca. The poems are fused with personal narratives and text from Lillian Hellman’s The Children Hours and Oscar Wilde by Leslie and Sewell Stokes, both written around the time of Lorca’s assassination. The multilingual performance clashes high art against queer slang, playing with language, music and double entendres particular to Latino and Black underground gay culture. The music is composed by Daniel de Jesus based on the last poems. Green, howiwantyougreen was developed during David Antonio Cruz’s residency at Project For Empty Space and LMCC. Green has been performed at Snug Harbor Cultural Center and Botanical Garden, The Whim Estate Plantation in St Croix, The Conservatory of Music of Puerto Rico in San Juan, Leslie Lohman Museum, and Gateway Projects. The performance is altered for each location to address the history of the building and/or neighborhood. This performance is presented in conjunction with the exhibition Mirror Mirror.
