The words, "read, make, watch, listen," in a search bar against the background of ocean waves

A SHORTLIST OF ONLINE CULTURAL CONTENT FOR THE WEEK OF June 1, 2020

Read

Shilhouets of two people: on crouching in front of a cannon, one standing and pointing away.
Kara Walker, installation detail of THE SOVEREIGN CITIZENS SESQUICENTENNIAL CIVIL WAR CELEBRATION, 2013.

"Witnessing history begets forgetting. For every day and every week in our ‘quarantine’, ‘self-isolation’, ‘lockdown’ or ‘shelter in place’, some wise fool asks us to consider the effects of social distancing, as if segregation weren’t already a reality."

Artist Kara Walker writes about our current moment in Frieze magazine.

The words, "Learning outside the lines," in black against a green background

"We are collecting experiences-as-artworks about early educational moments that deviate from whatever you consider to be normal within your K - 8th grade curriculum. Within Learning Outside The Lines, the person telling the story is an artist pointing to a particularly influential experience and claiming that memory as an artwork in this present moment. We’re not necessarily looking for your fondest memories, just an unusual moment that highlights an unorthodox way of learning. Stories should focus on learners’ perspectives rather than teachers' perspectives. Anyone, anywhere in the world 18+ years of age can contribute a story."

Learning Outside the Lines is hosted by King School Museum of Contemporary Art (KSMoCA) and produced by KSMoCA members Amanda Leigh Evans, Harrell Fletcher, Lisa Jarrett, and Roz Crews. Click here to submit your work.

Watch: Live

"Join museum educators Darryl Dwayne and Anna Muñiz in a casual meet up to celebrate and unwind. Each episode aims to be a conversation on art, culture, and spirits. We’ll start with a toast, mix a drink, tell museum stories, and focus on one of the works from the museum’s collection."

The Newark Museum of Art hosts a friendly gathering on Friday, June 5 at 6 p.m. Free, but registration required.

Watch: Any Time

"Narrated by an animated crocodile, Meriem Bennani’s recent film 'Party on the CAPS' is a docunarrative exploring the robust, technologically advanced, and totally hybridized culture of a fictional island in the Atlantic Ocean called The CAPS. The film follows residents of a Moroccan neighborhood on the island–who, like all of the CAPS’ inhabitants, are refugees rejected by the United States—as they hang out, party, and otherwise go about their lives in this speculative society. Blending science-fiction and geopolitical realities, 'Party on the CAPS' addresses immigration, surveillance, the real and the virtual, and globalized culture with humor and empathy."

Watch a screening of Party on the CAPS, followed by a conversation between the artist Meriem Bennani and Aria Dean, Rhizome editor and curator.

"Brands hold immense sway over both consumers and the American legal system. Few know this as well as Dapper Dan, who went from street hustler to fashion impresario and has spent time on both sides of American trademark law. Articles of Interest is a limited-run podcast series about fashion, housed inside the design and architecture podcast 99% Invisible. Launched in 2018, the show encourages people to rethink the way we look at what we wear and what it says about us."

99% Invisible covers the David and Goliath fights that take place between small and large fashion designers around copyright infringement and fair use.
