Unsolicited Exhibition Proposals

Established in 1979, the Paul Robeson Galleries’ mission and programming embody Paul Robeson’s life-long commitment to unfettered artistic freedom, cultural democracy, and transnationalism. This mission is carried out in the presentation of visual arts exhibitions, gallery education and other public programs, and in partnerships with community organizations, in a spaces across the campus of Rutgers University – Newark and Express Newark. We accept unsolicited exhibition and program proposals from artists and curators on an ongoing basis.

Below you can find descriptions of some of our spaces and method for submitting an unsolicited proposal.

CJ Gallery, Rutgers School of Law – Newark
The Paul Robeson Galleries curates small-scale exhibitions of two-dimensional and/or low-relief works in the Criminal Justice Gallery located in the Rutgers School of Law – Newark, 123 Washington Street 5th floor, Newark, NJ.  This exhibition space is dedicated to the work of artists from New Jersey.  Please see below for details below about how to submit a proposal. The Window Gallery, Express Newark – Hahne’s Building
The Paul Robeson Galleries curates small-scale exhibitions of two-dimensional and/or low-relief works on the third floor of the Hahne’s Building. The Window Gallery occupies the hallway spaces leading to the Express Newark Main Gallery and Shine Portrait Studio. This is an ongoing open-call, please send proposals at any time.

The Box Gallery, Express Newark – Hahne’s Building
The Paul Robeson Galleries curates small-scale exhibitions. The Box Gallery is located across from the Window Gallery. This is an ongoing open-call, please send proposals at any time.

How to Submit a Proposal
Please send hard copy submissions by mail to:

A proposal should consist of:
1. Contact information: Name, mailing address, telephone number, email address, website (if applicable)
2. Resume/CV with short narrative biography (less than 200 words)
3. Exhibition proposal (less than 500 words); please indicate preferred venue
4. Artist statement/statement about your curatorial practice (less than 500 words)
5. CD or USB stick with images and (JPEGs only, 300dpi or larger, any number as necessary to show proposed artwork) and/or video, if applicable.  Image or video files should be labelled in the following format: “1_LastName_FirstName”
6. Image list with tile, date, media, dimensions, and installation notes of images provided

Do not send electronic proposals, they will not be reviewed. Please do not contact us to check on the status of your application; we will notify you in due course. Proposals will not be returned, therefore do not send original material as we will not return them to you.  If you wish to know if your proposal reached us, please purchase tracking for your parcel, or include a stamped, self-addressed postcard in your package.
