Paul Robeson Galleries at Express Newark is pleased to announce that Ceaphas Stubbs will be the next Artist in Residence.

The Artist in Residence is selected by a jury of art professionals. During their six-month tenure as Artist in Residence, a Newark artist works in a studio located in the former Hahne Department Store and participates in the dynamic cultural community of Express Newark.

In his work, Ceaphas Stubbs explores black sexuality, nostalgia and pleasure through a queer lens. His process begins by creating sculptures from materials such as fabrics, printouts, wires, yarn, and found objects, which are then photographed and dismantled. Working at the intersections of photography, sculpture, and painting, Stubbs work suggests the sometimes slippery relationship between expectation, perception and reality.

Stubbs holds a Master in Fine Arts from the University of Pennsylvania and a Bachelor of Arts from Rutgers University. His work has been shown widely, including in exhibitions at Reginald Ingraham Gallery, Culver City, California; The Center for Photography at Woodstock, New York; Czong Institute for Contemporary Art Museum, Gimpo-si, South Korea; The Print Center, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Aljira Center for Contemporary Art, Newark, New Jersey; and FiveMyles Gallery, Brooklyn, New York, amongst many others. Stubbs has previously participated in residences at Jamaica Center for Arts and Learning, Jamaica, New York and Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, Skowhegan, Maine. He lives and works in Newark, New Jersey.
